OUR AIM Disco never died. It just mutated over the years into hip hop, 80’s electro and finally, house music. After all, ‘disco’ was just a word that described the music played in the underground NY discotheques of the 70’s. Eclectic mixes of soul, funky rock, african/latin percussion and oddball European dance records held sway. They didn't stick slavishly to one genre or bang on the latest big tunes and hope for the best. They mixed it up to mixed crowds – whites, blacks, Puerto Ricans, gay, straight, whatever. It was a party, baby! It is
this looseness and inclusiveness that DownTownSounds aims to recreate.
ABOUT DOWNTOWNSOUNDS "There’s these guys in Dublin who do really good parties, 52Funk and DownTownSounds. I mean I was happy to be a guest for them but the other DJs they bring in are good too, Like Danny [Wang] and Nicky Siano and stuff like that. They have their eye and their mind on more of a musical thing. A lot of time people don’t even take the chance, you know? And the crowd really likes it and their parties really go off! " -Darshan Jesrani, Metro Area Housemates Jimmy B, Sas and Benway (the DJ formerly known as Stavros) formed DownTownSounds in February 2001 along with some cute Kerry whore called Fanto who has since been deported to Manchester. Having found they shared a love for crazed funk, soul and house, and that 3 day house parties were much more fun in someone elses house, they tried to find someone who would put up with their antics. Unbelievably nobody would, so they decided to have some parties in clubs. Memorable one offs
ensued in Mono and The Shelter, before they settled in a
fortnightly slot in Slattery’s of Capel St in early
2003. Meanwhile, Pablo was spinning soul and funk in the
bar at The Temple Bar Music Centre’s Screamadelica
and at the popular Savage Banter and Fatty Fatty nights
in The Thomas House. They went on to help run 52FUNK at
The Belvedere, a fortnightly party running since July 2003.
They booked DJ’s like
The Unabombers (Electric Chair, Manchester), The Glimmer Twins
(Culture Club, Belgium) and Darshan Jesrani (Metro Area, Environ
Records) for the depth and range of music they would play,
for the way they could zig zag between genres and never lose
the crowd. If you don't already get our mailout, send us a mail at info@downtownsounds.org. If you already receive the mailout and don't want to anymore, then email us at the same address, with unsubscribe in the subject field of the email. |
